How Did The Journey to Donating for K9 Programs Begin?
It all started at Percy’s Auto Shop, where I went for a routine oil change. As I sat waiting, I struck up a conversation with Officer Eric Depner who was also in having service done, he is out of the P.I. Police Department was friendly, approachable, and passionate about his work. We found ourselves chatting about German Shepherds. Soon, another familiar face joined in: Ryan Rackliff, who had served both in the sheriff’s office and the town police department in his past careers.
The conversation shifted to K9 units. Both Officer Depner and Ryan shared how challenging it can be to start and sustain a K9 program. The hurdles ranged from limited funding to finding the right dogs. But one thing that really stuck with me was the mention of how breeders tend to hike their prices when they hear law enforcement is involved. It was disheartening to learn that even those who protect us often face barriers when securing a critical resource like a K9 partner.
That conversation lingered in my mind long after I left Percy’s. I couldn’t shake the thought of these officers—people who risk their lives daily to keep us safe—facing many challenges to get the necessary tools. When I got home, I talked to my husband, Steve. I told him I wanted to do something to help those who run toward danger when the rest of us run away. It didn’t take long for us to decide: we would start a K9 program.
That very night, the idea began to take shape. I reached out to Sheriff Shawn Gillen, who has always strongly advocated for his community and officers. I told him about our plan—to donate a puppy every other year to law enforcement agencies in need. Sheriff Gillen was on board immediately, and I offered him the first pick from our first litter.
Our mission was clear: to provide high-quality, well-bred dogs to K9 units without the financial burden that typically comes with it. These dogs aren’t just pets; they’re partners. They help track down missing people, detect narcotics, and protect their handlers and communities. Their work is invaluable, and it’s an honor to play a small part in ensuring these officers have what they need to do their jobs safely.
What started as a simple oil change and a chance conversation has become something much bigger—a way to give back to those who give so much. Our K9 program isn’t just about dogs. It’s about gratitude, community, and the belief that we all have a role in making our world a little safer.
As we move forward with this program, my hope is that more people will be inspired to support their local law enforcement. Whether it’s through donating time and resources or simply saying thank you, every bit helps. These men and women put everything on the line for us, and they deserve our support.
We have also begun breeding for service dogs and have four successful placements!
